🦋How a caterpillar becomes a Butterfly🦋

All butterflies have one thing in common, they all used to be caterpillars. Caterpillars and butterflies can come in all different colours, shapes, sizes and patterns. There are up to 20 thousand kinds of butterflies out of the world!

Stages. Stages in the Latin words is Metamorphosis.
The first stage is the Egg stage. During the egg stage the mother butterfly will search and search for the perfect place to lay her eggs. When the eggs are ready, the little caterpillars chew themselves out of the egg, which will give them nutrients.

Stage 2. Larva stage. Once the baby caterpillar has eaten a big enough hole. The baby caterpillar will crawl out of the hole and eat the rest of the egg shell. Then the caterpillar will eat the leaf that it is sitting on and probably the next one too. All the food that the baby caterpillar eats helps it grow bigger and bigger until it’s too big for its exoskeleton.

An exoskeleton is a little small. So to fix this the caterpillar gulfs in air to expand itself & then it waits and lets the exoskeleton harden. New exoskeletons will not fit the caterpillar either it molts and regrows its exoskeleton again and again, usually about four or five times after. After all that molting and regrowing the caterpillar is ready to take a break.

Stage 3, Pupa. The pupa stage is when the caterpillar finds a sturdy branch or stem to hang upside down from. It molts its exoskeleton one final time regrowing a new layer called a chrysalis. Inside the chrysalis the caterpillar. But the caterpillar isn’t really a caterpillar anymore. A pupa is an insect, when it's between being a baby caterpillar and an adult like a butterfly. The chrysalis has a hard shell to protect the soft pupa while it changes into its adult form. Inside the chrysalis it regrows six legs, antenna and adds wings. The pupa stays inside the chrysalis for ten or more days.

Stage 4, Butterfly stage. One day the chrysalis moves and starts to crack open and the butterfly will slowly start to crawl out. Since the butterfly has been in the chrysalis for so long, the wings would be crumpled, soggy and wet. Once the butterfly is fully out. Blood will start pumping into its wings to help them straighten and dry!

  1. Kia ora Anika. What a detailed well written explanation of how a caterpillar undergoes metamorphosis to become a butterfly. I was actually listening to a butterfly expert on the radio today talking about just that. It is such a fascinating process. Did you have many monarch butterflies around your house this year?
