Art!

                                                                        Art!

My classroom, Tane Mahuta have been working on an art project. On the 25th of October the whole classroom went on a walk, around New Brighton. We stopped quite a few times for the people that had not sketched anything, and the adults were taking pictures of different places around New Brighton, so then when we had gone back to school we could still have the pictures in front of us. The community picture that I drew, was facing out towards the sea, sky and the Port hills.

The next day when we were working on inquiry, we started drawing our sketch onto a piece of A3 paper. Once you had finished drawing the sketch onto the paper you could start either water colouring or painting, I chose to paint, since I find it easier to make ombre. What I found difficult, was making the sand colour, because, sometimes it would be to dark or to light. Once you had finished your first painting, you could move onto another painting, I haven't finished my second painting. But I am happy with my two paintings!

It was really fun drawing the community!

The Magic Miracle!

This is my children's book, and we are going to be presenting all of our story's to the little kids, so hope you enjoy!

Pulleys and Levers!

                     Pulleys & Levers!

Kathy’s kaiawhina went with Alison, and we learnt about Pulleys and Levers.  The people that I mostly hung out with were Eden and Skye. But some of the time the teacher would have to pick out our groups, since it was difficult since there were three of us. We did lots of cool experiments such as; building a catapult, making a structure of how to pull different types of objects up and at the very end we made a simple machine, including a Lever and a Pulley.

It was really fun learning about all of the science rotations!

Winter Sport!

11.09.19

Winter Sport!

All throughout this term and half of term two, we have had the choice if we would like to do Winter Sport. There was a choice of; soccer ( which I did ), netball, hockey, capture the flag, circus, bowls and table tennis ( and probably more ). Every Wednesday were our practice, but some of them we had to miss ( probably because of the weather ).

My choice was soccer. The people that I hung out with the most is; Eden, Lily, Skye and Mailli, although Skye and Mailli where in the Rebels and Lily Eden and I were in the Roadrunners.

I enjoyed soccer because, since I was about 4 or 5, I played soccer every day at school. I have loved it ever since I started. Why I picked soccer is because, I love running around and getting dirty. And I even scored a couple of goals!

One of my favourite positions is either goaly, striker and center! Why I like playing goaly is because , every time the other team just is racing towards me I feel quite nervous but hen I just end up stopping the ball. Next year, when I am a year 6, I am diffidently doing soccer, and I do recommend the year fours and under to do soccer!

Climate change with Talei!

Climate change with Talei!

Kathy's kaiawhina have been working with Talei for round about 9 sessions. Talei has been teaching us about climate change,  lots of different types of pollution and  lots of experiments. Some of the experiments that we did are ; melting ice, exhaust pipe experiment, different types of pollution sticking to chap-stick and the room temperature.

How we did the chap stick experiment was by smudging chap-stick onto a square piece of paper. and sellotaping it to lots if places around the school.

The other experiment  the we did was the exhaust pipe experiment. You have to  use a white new sock, a real car and a hair tie. Drive around  with the white sock on the exhaust pipe for about 15 minutes and then at the end of your drive look at the sock and it would've turned either grey or black. Then at the end, if you have a small microscope look at all of the pollution that the car pollutes to our earth!

Second to last melting ice. So there are 2 trays, one of them will be covered  in glad wrap and one will just be bare. Before you put the glad wrap on, you have to put ice in both of the trays, and to make it look like a home, place two teddy bears and a lego house. Then see which one melts the fastest!

Please make sure to recycle the plastic!

Ecosystem!

Ecosystems!

For the last two weeks Kathy's kaiawhina have been working with Talei and she has been teaching us about Ecosystems. What you need in an ecosystem is; the producers ( so for an example produces are like trees and bushes they make fruit and produce their own food ) and second is a consumer ( animals and other creatures that eat things ) and last are decomposers ( things that break down food such as worms.

How I made my ecosystem was by using; an ice cream container ( or plastic bottle ), stones, seeds ( and make sure your plant can grow so you would need to cut the whole lid off so it can grow ), leaves, soil, snails, worms ( you can pick any kind of bug and finally water.

How to make your own ecosystem!

  • First you get a plastic bottle or a clear container.
  • Then get any type of rocks that are medium size place the rocks down.
  • After that pour the soil in to the clear container.
  • Cut up some veges such as carrots lettuce cucumber ( just make sure the snails and worms can eat the veges).
  • Bury any type of plant seeds in to the soil.
  • Once you've put the seeds in, put the cut up veges on top of the seeds
  • Nearly finished put the snails and worms in.
  • Finally cut or melt the holes so the worms and snails can breathe! Now you are ready to make a Ecosystem!
Now your ready to make an Ecosystem!

Kitchen science!

12/08 Kitchen science!

From the 14th of July to the 8th of August Kathyś kaiawhina did kitchen science. We did all sorts of different experiments. The experiments that we did were; dancing raisins, elephant toothpaste, homemade lemonade, magic milk, plastic milk that we tried about 3 times and it still didn't work on any of the tries and our last experiment was; how does water change colour.

My 2 favourite experiments were either elephant toothpaste or magic milk. Why I think elephant toothpaste is one of my favourite is because I loved the eruption that happened when we added the yeast. How I thought magic milk was one of my other favourite experiments was because I loved how the colours just collided as soon as the dishwashing liquid hit the milk, the colours just zoomed back when the dishwashing liquid dipped in like someone had pushed them to the wall.

Before we had to do each experiment we had to do a sheet. So first we had to write up the title then we had to do the aim of the experiment after that was the prediction underneath the prediction box there were three big boxes the first one was observe ( bullet points ) then there was labelled diagram ( before ) and then labelled diagram ( after ). Underneath those three big boxes there was how you explain the experiment works. We put a sheet that fitted in the explain box and finally the last box it was how you could change the experiment.

I really enjoyed learning about kitchen science. All the experiments that we tried were so fun. Some of them failed and some of them succeeded. The ones that succeeded were; elephant toothpaste, why does the water change colour? Homemade lemonade, magic milk, dancing raisins but the one that failed as only plastic milk.

Kathy's kaiawhina learnt about more complex science words.
What's the difference are about solids, liquids and gases? How to make different experiments and that we could make them at home and most of the experiments included white vinegar.

The Box

      The Box

.

I asked mum if we could go to gran dad Dave ́s house; she said yes, I whispered underneath my breath YAY. I was so pleased. Can we go now please mum; I love going to gran dad Dave house is awesome his fruit is always so ripe. Ok I guess so ̈ mum replied. Come on then let's go.

We arrived, come on out of the car James; said (mum). We opened the creaky old door, I couldn't wait until I saw gran dad Dave. Mum and I couldn't see him. We looked at each other and we were scared for a moment but mum and I could faintly hear his voice it echoed across the room. Gran dad called out, stay low and don't ́t say a word¨ we went over to him but not usual walking we had to crawl. We saw him he was hiding behind a chair and still in his pjs, it was odd, but the weird thing was it was 12:36.

What are you doing asked (mum). Over there look said grandad Dave. Its a mouse what's so scary about that said James. Yeah I suppose so, but I ́ve already set up a box with a pencil holding it up said grandad Dave. Oh no that's not good said (mum). Yes it is I want it out said gran dad Dave. Shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh he is about to go in…

He is in, grandad Dave jumped with delight he was so happy but he thought to himself; what do I do now. He went down stairs with the innocent little mouse, so we followed…
Grandad Dave put the mouse onto the dusty table, it smelt very old. He went upstairs to get some bread for the mouse and broke it up into little pieces then after he had apart he poured some fresh water from the tap onto a can lid. Grandad Dave walked slowly back down he placed the crumbs and water down on the table. What are you doing asked (mum). I’m giving the mouse some food I think he's hungry. So he gave the mouse some crumbs but the mouse chucked the crumb back it was odd so he lifted the box.

Dave took the piece of bread and placed it into his mouth showing the mouse that the crumb was delicious, the mouse looked at grandad Dave. Dave gave ( hah alliteration ) the mouse the crumb, even though he swallowed it but he tricked the mouse with a tiny bit of magic. The mouse started to eat a bit of cheese, then he thought the the mouse would be ok. He opened the window I could see big red eyes then it screeched then it pounced on the window he shut the window on the cats face he felt sorry for a moment but luckily the mouse was ok but if grandad left him the mouse outside he would be in danger.

I asked mum if we could stay; she said yes ok only tonight not tomorrow night ok kapish but you have to ask grandad Dave ok yes i’ll go sk him now I ran down stairs he wasn’t there but I saw him he was sitting in the chair he looked sad, I couldn’t see the mouse either. What happened grandad I said. The mouse ran off with the bread, I was trying to pat him but he just ran away.

I went to bed it was late so I was going to say good night to grandad but he was fake sleeping for the mouse, there was crumbs on his robe. I peeked over his shoulder the mouse was there eating the crumbs he looked at the mouse he was eating the crumbs and watching TV. I sneaked back to bed, mum was already asleep. I thought I was dreaming but I pinched myself and I woke up. I got out of bed and creeped into the lounge the tv was still on and the mouse and grandad were snuggled up together. The TV was still on so I turned it off. Then I went back to bed. That thought of grandad Dave and the mouse all snuggled up just made my heart melt it was so sweet.

Marble role challenge!!!

Marble Roll Challenge!!!!

Today Kathy's kaiawhina had to make a marble roll, with ( Miss j )

We had to be in groups of either 3 or 2. My two buddies that I worked with are Skye and Eden.

The things that we used were, 6 pieces of news print, 2 pieces of A4 paper and 2 meters of sellotape.

it took us about half an hour to make our creation. Our creation kept on breaking, but in the end our marble run was standing pretty well. In the end Levi's team one and then Melody's. I think our team came 4th. But winning isn't everything it's about how much FUN we have!

Next time I would make the marble roll more secure and sturdier and definitely more stable. But I think our structure of the marble roll was pretty good but I would make those changes!

Our Marble went 4.7 meters which is close to 5, that's pretty impressive.

Kids teach!

31.07.19
Tane Mahuta Kids Teach!

If you have never done kids teach you are in luck because I'm about to tell you all about kids teach.

Kids teach is were some of the kids have to write a letter to the teachers and they have to explain like what equipment you need, what you will be teaching and what warm up games you do.

Ava and I taught 13 kids how to play Netball. First we did a warm up, the warm ups included running around shooting hoops passing. So the games that we play were windows which you pass in and out, all in tag you probably know what that is and shooting hoops and we take two turns each.

The things that worked well were there listening, they worked well together to get in teams, they didn't complain about their teams or what the warm up game was. I think the team that Ava and I taught worked well.

I enjoyed teaching netball. I would consider teaching netball next time we have kids teach which will be soon. The kids that we taught were terrific. It is so fun working with them.

The changes that we could make are pumping up the balls before we do the session, making the netball session better so there will be more people in a team and an equal amount.

I think we should do kids teach again because I think the kids enjoyed every single activity there was.

Tuatara!

23.07.19

🦎Tuatara!

The Tuatara are native to New Zealand. Tuatara have been originally all over NZ. Tuatara have been around for over 200.25 million years. Tuatara are nocturnal reptiles. Tuatara have been only found in the offshore predator free island.

The differences about a Tuatara are, they don’t have external ear drums like lizards, Tuatara have extra holes in their skull and they have different ribs. The difference about there ribs are that there ribs are not attached to the spine or thoracic ribs.

Tuatara are born with an extra eye. The eye is on their forehead. The eye is only visible when they are hatchlings. There is a translucent patch at the top of their forehead. Once they are a few months old their scales grow over the patch. Then it isn’t visible anymore. There third eye isn’t meant for sight. It has lens and a retina. Their third eye is for absorbing UV light. They bask (which is lying down) in the sun.

The Tuatara is a carnivore, which means they only eat other animals like insects, beetles, spiders, bird eggs, frogs and small mammals and reptiles. Tuatara are sit and wait predators. When they are looking for food they usually sit and wait for their food at the mouth of their burrows.

If a Tuatara is fighting for either a girlfriend or a burrow they would make their crests stand big and tall and stand tall on there legs and puff their throats out then the biggest and scariest Tuatara would WIN!

Did you know, Tuatara means spines in the back, in English.
           Comment your answer.

Hope you enjoyed my description of the Tuatara!

The Kakapo is a native bird to New Zealand. NZ is their home. Kakapo are a parrot and they also cannot fly, even if they tried!

Kakapo are nocturnal. But sometimes they wake up before sunset. Kakapo were once one of the most successful abundant herbivores in New Zealand.

The Kakapo have, black beady eyes, shades of light green and dark green and a mix of light and dark brown. The Kakapo has whiskers to help feel its way through the dark.

Kakapo are sometimes caught during moonlight shaking a tree or bush until they fall to the ground.

The weight of a Kakapo is 4 kilos. They say that the Kakapo is one of the heaviest birds. The Kakapo is too short and too heavy to be airborne so instead it climbs trees.

The favourite food of a Kakapo is the seeds of a Rimu tree. Kakapo only breed when the Rimu trees produce a bump of crops. Kakapo breed slower than any other bird!

               Did you know,
That Kakapo live longer they sometimes live
         More than 100 years old!

Matariki

Our classroom has been doing Matariki rotations. In Kathy's kaiawhina we are leaning about the stars, and how to do a star with strings as well as doing the four triangles, in Talei's kaiawhina they are making a koruwai. Alisons kaiawhina are doing weaving, and sticking the fish/eka on the wall and putting it into a whale swimming. It was so much fun!

                       Have a good MATARIKI!

Sphero Chariots of Fire!

Elizabeth set us a challenge to make a chariot for our sphero bots. My team was Skye Eden and I. We made our chariot using, straws, cardboard, sellotape, laminated strips, hot glue and bottle caps. Our team had to do two attempts on making our chariots because our wheels were to high and our straws that attached to the sphero were to low. The laminated strip around the sphero was to low as well so we had to make a new chariot which worked out much better than the first attempt!

This is my poem that I wrote for Mothers day, hope you like it!

My Magnificent Mum!

You are a light bulb , popping up with cool ideas
You are a brush , sweeping all my bad sins away.
You are my human shield , always protecting me from danger.
You are a traffic light , stopping me from making big mistakes.
You are a sun , shining down on me keeping me warm.
You are my comedian always making me laugh.

My camp reflection...

My favourite activity was… The giant swing because I got on and did it. I challenged myself by going up to level three my heart was beating so fast the rope started to give me a rash as I was at the top of the tree since it was so tight. The people who I made a connections with were Lucy and Minttu, I made a connection with Minttu because I was in group 6 with her and I was spending a lot of time with Lucy and all my other friends.

My favourite meal probably had to be fish in chips and my favourite dessert was CHOCOLATE CAKE AND ICE CREAM!

When camp was officially over I went home with Ruby and we went to Switch Cafe and had a nice cold ice chocolate and a rich brownie then we went home and did some ART!🏕🏕
